$0, Thanks All!::Happy Hour at Public

Thank you all for joining our Happy Hour at Public last night!!!
Last night’s Happy Hour was extra challenging because everyone’s charge was added to one check. We had close to 30 people last night, and having all of these charges on one check was an insane Public policy. Too many things could have gone wrong…
At the end of our Happy Hour, we found out that nothing had gone wrong. Magically, the total balance was $0. Which means… This proves that One Brick volunteers are the best volunteers!!! Thank you for taking care of your bills!!!
If the total balance were other than $0, what would have happened?
Somehow I would have to earn quick bucks… As SarahZ suggested, I would have jumped on a pole and started a pole dancing, and then, swung myself over to one of the tables and started a table dancing. Once the dances were finished, I would have cartwheeled myself to the kitchen and clean the dirty dishes. I am so happy that I did not have to go through these!
Once again, Thank you all and please continue with your great work!
The Capital Fringe Festival::The Miss Teen Jesus Pageant

NivaH and WhitneyC, One Brick’s own volunteers, have been performing at the 5th Anniversary Capital Fringe Festival. Their show is called “The Miss Teen Jesus Pageant.” The show has thoroughly entertained us and the audiences. JenK and I have volunteered for multiple shows. Well, to be truthful, JenK has not missed a show, but I did miss one show. Which means… JenK is, once again, ahead of me in the event completed list (this is whole other story). Anyways, we will be volunteering for the final show #4 on Saturday night.
The play has fun-catchy songs, great dancers, funny lines, an audience participation, and wonderful performances which keep you laughing throughout the show. It pretty much has little bits of everything. My volunteering assignment has been at backstage, so I have not seen the show as an audience’s perspective. However, as a backstage helper, I noticed that actors were having great time with each other. They were simply having fun performing and everyone had big smile while waiting for the next scene. I had my own share of big smile when my little hands, in the darkness, helped an actor to strap on fake boobs as I fondled them longer than necessary because fake boobs had to be just right.
We are looking forward to the final show. It will be a sell out. JenK and I, certainly, will miss the backstage actions when the curtain closes on Saturday night.
Scavenger Hunt 2010!

Ready or not 2010 Scavenger Hunt is coming!
Laura and Sriram, Thanks for helping me with designing clues and also for setting some boundaries on what to include in the clues. Chrissy, thanks for designing that flyer! I still don’t know how you manage to put the orange color around the Capitol Building!
Now the clues, during the clue write up, I was too eager to create tons of clues. But as we learned from last year’s Hunt (which devastated many
players–10+ miles of walking) that moderation is good for our mind and body, because of this lesson, we agreed to shrink down the number of clues to 2 per museum, instead of 5 clues per museum.
The following museums are our targets:
* National Museum of American History
* National Museum of Natural History
* National Gallery of Art (East & West Wings)
* Freer Gallery of Art
* Smithsonian Institution Building
* Arts & Industries Bldg and nearby grounds
* Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
* National Air and Space Museum
* National Museum of the American Indian
* US Botanic Garden Conservatory
10 museums equal to 20 clues at the most!! That’s doable. To test this theory, JenK volunteered to be our Hamster for a dry run.
Some time next week, with my clip board and a pen in hands, as I observe her manic behaviors to solve her clues, I will follow JenK everywhere at the Mall–of course, except her visits to restrooms. I am a gentleman after all. Well, I pretend to play one in real life. Anyways, she will make sure that clues make sense and somewhat fun.
What if she were to get frustrated by clueless clues and she were to get mad at me? Well, I will have a tazer gun ready to zap her, just like that!! Recently, it was proven on a baseball field that it works quite well. I am expecting a smooth sailing.
We know the best part of the Scavenger Hunt. It is the ending. And it will end at Penn Quarter Sports Tavern. Teams will be scored at the Tavern and the winner(s) will be announced.
Lastly, we are leaning toward the winner takes it all approach to prizes. We have been able to pick up the following gift certificates:
- Policy Restaurant Lounge
- Red Velvet Cupcakery
- The Tasting Room Wine Bar
- La Tomate / Mourayo
These prizes are worth $180. Perhaps, we could arrange some gag gifts to the 2nd place team.
DC One Brick at the end of the Rainbow

On a pouring rainy Saturday (March 13), we volunteered at ShamRock Fest 2010 (RFK Stadium) to pour beers to celebrate St. Patrick’s day and to raise fund for DC One Brick.
We, the lucky few, did not pour any normal, run-of-the-mill beer. We were assigned to the Guinness station. The view of the Guinness truck and its 24 tap handles utterly excited us. It was the jaw dropping “Woah” moment. Immediately, our hands were on the taps as if we were hungry piglets trying to figure out what to do with her udders.
I was unfamiliar with handling taps, so I did not know what to do with them. After seeing a demo, I placed an empty cup under a tap, and gently, slightly, pulled on it. The thin, dark, creamy stream of Guinness filled the cup. It was filled with creamy cloud. Unlike the sky, the creamy cloud settled and cleared to the bottom of the cup, and soon, Guinness appeared with a smile. Yet, another “Woah” moment.
No cups were left dry. As I got comfortable with handling taps, to meet the demand, I grabbed 4 cups and placed them under 4 taps. Four smiles were better than one smile. It was fun!
It rained all day. One Brickers (50+ of us), however, fought the weather, and in our own little way, we made Ireland proud.
I did not find a pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow, but I, as a fan of Guinness, found pints of Guinness instead. The whole experience was a match made in heaven. I wish we could do this again next year!
It was ALIVE!

As an Event Coordinator (EC) on Saturday, Feb 27th for Alexandria Involved Ecumenically (ALIVE!), I did something that I don’t normally do 9 out of 10 times. OK, I exaggerated a little here: I don’t do it 10 out of 10 times!
So, what did I do?
As one of EC’s few duties, I printed a back up copy of a “Sign-In” sheet and brought it to the ALIVE! event. I have done my shares of events as an EC, but it was my first time printing it–I could feel Event Managers shaking their little fists. And better yet, on that very day, it was actually needed since the Event Manager was a little behind schedule. Yes, it was my Gold medal moment!
I was soooo proud that I looked around with hope that someone would pat my back for being such a fantastic EC. I waited, I waited, and I waited as I walked round the room clucking like a proud Rooster. After awhile, nothing happened, so I reached back and pat myself on the back.
For the rest of the ALIVE! event, I was assigned as a doorman and clucked at everyone “No Standing!” I was pretty good at it. Yes, it was a great event!
